Dr David J. Zaber
Chairman of The Board

An environmental scientist and independent environmental consultant based in the United States of America. He holds a PhD in Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan, with academic and professional expertise in environmental sustainability, ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation, and ecological assessment. Dr. Zaber has extensive experience in environmental research, natural resource management, conservation planning, and community-based environmental initiatives. His work focuses on promoting evidence-based approaches to environmental protection, sustainable development, and ecological resilience through interdisciplinary collaboration and applied environmental science.

Throughout his career, he has contributed to environmental monitoring and conservation initiatives addressing biodiversity protection, ecosystem health, and sustainable environmental management practices in different international settings. Dr. Zaber currently serves as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the African Transformation on Environmental and Health Action (ATEHA). In this role, he provides strategic leadership and guidance to support ATEHA’s mission of advancing environmental sustainability, public health, research collaboration, and community empowerment initiatives across Africa.

Professor Nawi Ng
Board Member

A Professor of Global Health at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He is a medical doctor and epidemiologist with over two decades of research experience across Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

His research addresses health inequalities, noncommunicable diseases, healthy ageing, mental health, and digital health  with a consistent focus on populations and settings that are systematically left behind. He leads an active research group and currently directs projects funded by the Swedish Research Council, Forte, and Horizon Europe, spanning intersectional mental health inequalities, frailty and ageing, digital health interventions, and integrated care.

He has published over 195 peer-reviewed articles, including in The Lancet and the Bulletin of the WHO. He serves on the editorial boards of PLOS Global Public Health and BMC Medicine, and is a board member of the Swedish Association for Social Medicine and Public Health.

As a board member of ATEHA, he contributes expertise in epidemiological methods, health equity research, and access to European research funding networks supporting ATEHA’s mission to advance environmental and public health across Africa.

Aziza Menouni
Board Member

A senior researcher specializing in the assessment of environmental and occupational exposures and their impact on human health. Her work focuses on human biomonitoring, exposure science, biomarker research, and exposome-based approaches.

Her research integrates epidemiology, toxicology, analytical sciences, and public health to better understand how chemical exposures and psychosocial risks affect vulnerable and working populations. She has contributed to studies combining biomonitoring data, exposure assessment, and molecular biomarkers to support evidence-based prevention strategies and improve environmental and occupational health policies.

With experience in international and multidisciplinary research settings, Dr. Menouni actively promotes collaboration across scientific disciplines and geographic regions. She is particularly interested in strengthening research partnerships between Europe and Africa, advancing capacity building, and fostering knowledge exchange to address shared environmental and public health challenges. She is involved in research and infrastructure projects at the EU level (PARC, EIRENE), as well as in R&D and capacity building projects with partners from the Global South. Her multicultural background has shaped a collaborative and inclusive approach to research, fostering dialogue and partnerships across disciplines, sectors, and regions.

Beyond her research activities, she is committed to translating scientific evidence into societal impact by supporting initiatives that connect science, policy, and practice. Her work reflects a strong belief in international cooperation, co-created solutions, and sustainable approaches to improving health and well-being for present and future generations.

Dr. Aziza Menouni advises ATEHA on research in environmental health, international cooperation opportunities, and capacity-building initiatives, contributing to the development of evidence-based and socially impactful solutions in Tanzania and in Africa in general.

Dr. Stefanie Lemke
Board Member

An international socio-legal scholar and lawyer by training specializing in human rights, rule of law, access to justice, legal aid, judicial reform, and civic space. She has worked globally with governments, universities, international organizations, NGOs, and law firms, including the United Nations, the European Commission, the Council of Europe, and the University of Oxford.  Dr. Lemke trained as a civil judge, public prosecutor, and human rights lawyer, and completed her PhD on legal empowerment at the Universities of Oxford, London, and Cologne. She has litigated high-profile cases before international human rights bodies and advised on major justice and governance reforms internationally.

She is Senior Scientific Officer with SOCLES International Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, the Founder and Director of the Rule of Law Initiative and has published extensively on access to justice, human rights  lawyering , judicial Integrityand civic engagement . Her work has contributed to international legal aid and justice policy development across Europe and beyond. In addition to her international legal and academic work,

Pierre Denieul
Board Member

An agricultural and agribusiness professional currently serving as Business Development Manager – Africa, Asia & Middle East, for DESANGOSSE. He has extensive experience in agricultural development, crop protection and nutrition, agribusiness management, and commercial strategy across Africa. His professional background includes leadership and technical roles at TIMAC AGRO East Africa and ARYSTA LIFESCIENCE Tanzania (now UPL). Pierre Denieul holds a Master of Sciences in Agriculture from École Supérieure d’Agriculture d’Angers
(2007–2012). Throughout his career, he has developed expertise in agricultural innovation, market  development, sustainable farming systems, sales and marketing strategy, and business management within
the agricultural sector.
His work focuses on supporting sustainable agricultural productivity, strengthening farmer-centered agricultural solutions, and promoting innovative approaches to crop management and soil health improvement. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Pierre Denieul serves as a Board Member of the African Transformation on Environmental and Health Action (ATEHA), where he supports strategic partnerships, sustainable agriculture initiatives, environmental health programs, and institutional development efforts across Africa.

Raphael J. Mwezi
Founder and Executive Secretary

A Tanzanian researcher and toxicology specialist with experience in pesticide management, occupational health, toxicology, environmental sustainability, and public health. He is the Founder and Executive Secretary of the African Transformation on Environmental and Health Action (ATEHA), a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing environmental protection, public health, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and community empowerment across Africa.

Mr. Mwezi has been actively involved in research and field-based initiatives addressing pesticide exposure, highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs), environmental pollution, toxicological risk assessment, and occupational health challenges among farming communities. His work integrates scientific research, policy engagement, community-based interventions, and capacity building to support evidence-based environmental and public health solutions.

He has collaborated with national and international institutions, researchers, regulatory authorities, and development partners on projects related to toxicology, pesticide safety, environmental health surveillance, sustainable agriculture, and public health advocacy.

Through his leadership at ATEHA, Raphael Mwezi continues to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, research innovation, youth engagement, and sustainable development initiatives aimed at improving environmental and health outcomes in Tanzania and across Africa.
